![]() Last week was a STRUGGLE for the grade 12s, as demonstrated in their test marks... I was quite disappointed with the class to be quite honest. In the past, students have found the Alternative Energy unit test the easiests of the 4 unit tests in Science 30. There are only 2 types of calculations required to remember, and the rest is theory. The issue is, students are responsible to research the information for the debate about the different alternative energies. The science 30s have had 4 work periods since receiving the debate topic, in addition to the (minimum) 30 minutes per day of work time they get... so it is not unreasonable for me to expect that most students would have at least some of the research started (I'm not sure what else they were doing). Because I expected students to complete their work on a google doc that I created for each group, it was simple to look into who had done research and who had not... and it was clear many had not done any research. Many students expect a rewrite on this test, when it is a privilege the science department offers to students who work hard and just need a second chance. As this is not the case for many of the students in science, the rewrite will only be offered to the students who had completed research on their debate topics prior to the exam. Hopefully, this week the science 30s turn it around and do their work, as now all we have left is projects and a debate. As my diploma marks are due at the start of exam break, the final project in science 30 will not be extended. If a student has not handed in the project section due, by 11:59pm on the set date, that part of the project will remain a zero. As this is the final assignment in science of their high school years, this is not an unreasonable expectation... as university is going to be quite the shock! So fingers crossed the science 30s step up. ![]() This week, as you know, the unit test has been moved to Wednesday. This is to alleviate the stress on the students who DIDN'T deserve to be punished for the students who did cheat... This Week in Science 30 Tuesday: In Class Assignment Wednesday: Physics Unit Test Thursday: Fossil Fuel Jig Saw Assignment Friday: Nuclear Fusion Upcoming Due Dates Wed May 24: Unit C Physics Test Fri June 2: Unit D Alternative Energies Test Reminder that the SCIENCE OLYMPICS is coming up this THURSDAY, May 25 @ 5pm! If you're not competing please come watch the competition!!! It's going to be a great night! ![]() This class... wow... seems like many (not all, but a lot) of the science 30s have packed it in, and have stopped trying. You have to understand this is frustrating to me, the teacher! Last week, the science 30s had a quiz, with questions straight out of the EXAMPLES of their workbook... (the examples we went through in class) and the average on this quiz was NOT a passing grade. This is unacceptable, so hopefully, my sarcastic reminder that school isn't over until June 30 may have had some effect, and they step up their game a little bit! This week, the science 30s will finish Unit C Physics, and prep for their unit test coming up soon! I am HOPING that after this "wild" long weekend coming up, they will settle in and get to work... here's to hoping! ![]() Last week in Science 30, we started Unit C Physics. I admit, the unit starts out very disjointed, as it introduces gravitational field strength, electric field strength and magnetic fields. All of them ARE related, in a general way... but for many students, it seems random, boring and hard. Physics in Science 30 is NOT difficult, as long as students do their practice problems and understand what they are being asked to do. The reason many students do worse on Unit C than any other unit, is simply the timing: it falls right into spring fever and grad hayday :( Based on the fact that I had half of the motor projects handed in on time, I feel like these issues are already starting... and that's not good! Hopefully the science 30s can step it up for the final 6 week push! This week in Science 30 Monday: Topic 4 Voltage Tuesday: Topic 5 Resistance Wednesday: Global Energy Research Thursday: Work Period Friday: Quiz Topic 1-3 Upcoming Due Dates in Sci 30 Fri May 5: Quiz Topic 1-3 Fri May 5: Circuit Inquiry Lab due Mon May 8: Optional Midterm Project due ![]() Inquiry and a midterm, sounds like a Disney movie... sort of... This week in sci 30, the class will determine how an electric motor works, and compare that with a generator and a combustion engine. Should be fun, and new! After that, the students will be given time to complete their project (from last unit) and study for their midterm (Thursday). This Week in Sci 30 Monday: Inquiry into Motors / Generators Tuesday: Inquiry into Motors / Generators Wednesday: Study / Work Thursday: SCI 30 MIDTERM Upcoming Due Dates in Sci 30 Wed Apr 12: Public Awareness Project due Thurs Apr 13: Sci 30 MIDTERM Fri Apr 27: Motor / Generator Project due ![]() This week the science 30s will be finishing up the first chemistry unit. In fact, this week is all project work and studying for the unit test! This Friday the school is offering an FLT day, which is meant for extra time for students to finish up their work that they are missing or have coming due prior to spring break. I will be going over the unit test during the FLT day, and then giving students time to work on things they have coming due! This Week in Chem 30 Monday: Work on Public Awareness Project Tuesday: Work on Public Awareness Project Wednesday: Study for Unit Test Thursday: Unit B Chem Test Friday: FLT Day Upcoming Due Dates in Sci 30 Wed Apr 5: Ester Lab due Thurs Apr 6: Unit B Chem Test *** please note: students are able to come in during FLT block and start their exam early *** Wed Apr 12: Public Awareness Project due Thurs Apr 13: SCI 30 MIDTERM EXAM *** please note: students are able to come in during FLT block and start their exam early *** Science 30 is awesome because it has a solid mix of the 4 sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science. The best part about environmental science is that it is essentially environmental chemistry! What i'm saying here is that science 30 has 2 chemistry units. FUN! So, although we will finish the learning of the chemistry this week, leading up to a unit test next week, the chemistry is not over in science 30 - it has just been put on hold until the last unit!
This week in Science 30 Monday: Topic 6 (continued) Alkenes + Alkynes Tuesday: Topic 7 Environmental OChem Wednesday: Topic 8 Alcohols, Acids and Esters Thursday: Ester Quick Lab Friday: Quiz (Topic 6-8) Upcoming Due Dates in Sci 30 Fri Mar 31: Quiz Topic 6-8 (Ochem Chart due) Wed Apr 5: Ester Lab due Thurs Apr 6: Unit B Chem Test Wed Apr 12: Public Awareness Project due Thurs Apr 13: Sci 30 MIDTERM ![]() Last week was a heavy learning curve for a lot of students in science 30. This week, we will apply the learning to the lab setting! From there, we will get into organic chemistry, which is very similar to learning a new language... and is awesome (and my favourite thing in the world). This Week in Sci 30 Tuesday: Titration Quick Lab Wednesday: Work Period Thursday: Quiz Topic 3-5 Friday: Topic 6 Alkanes, etc Upcoming Due Dates Thurs Mar 23: Quiz Topic 3-5 Fri Mar 24: Titration Quick Lab due ![]() Last week the science 30s completed their first of 4 unit tests. Overall, this test went quite well. If students wish to rewrite the test, they must complete test corrections and all workbook questions to prove that they are well prepared for the rewrite exam. This test will occur Wednesday March 15 after school. Rewrite eligibility is dependant on if students have handed in all labs and projects on time (no lates = rewrite!) To finish up the unit, the science 30s have their genetic technology project due Monday March 13! On Thursday, we started chemistry in science 30, and the looks of enjoyment were few and far between. It should be noted that for many students this is the first time they have encountered anything chemistry related since science 10 (which could be over 2 years ago!). THIS is where coming in for extra help during FLT will allow students to feel more comfortable with the work. As well, completing all practice problems will re-enforce the neural pathways that they will quickly be developing through this unit! This Week in Science 30 Monday: Indicator Quick Lab Tuesday: Topic 3 Effects of Combustion Wednesday: Topic 4 Quantifying Acids Thursday: Quiz Topic 1-2 Friday: Topic 5 Learning from Acids Upcoming Due Dates in Science 30 Mon March 13: Genetic Tech Project due Wed Mar 15: REWRITE A after school Fri Mar 16: Quiz Topic 1-2 Chem |
