![]() This week in science 30, the students will be introduced to the costs of electrical energy, after calculating the amount of residual power. They will also find out how the industry transforms power from the generator stations to household energy! This is actually a useful part of Science 30, as, for the most part kids have no idea what the costs of energy are! Last week, the science 30s were asked to design an electrical motor and generator. I overheard kids saying (today) "This is going to be fun, because it's really hands on." That's awesome, but the science 30s were given two work periods last week to design and figure this out... so that tells me they just wasted their time on Thursday and Friday :( This week in Science 30 Monday: Topic 6 Power and Energy Costs Tuesday: Topic 7 Transmitting Electricity Wednesday: Chapter Review (study period) Thursday: Unit C Quiz 1 Friday: Topic 8 Electromagnetic Spectrum Upcoming Due Dates Thurs. Nov 26: Unit C Quiz 1 (topic 1-7) Fri. Nov 27: Motor Project due Fri. Dec 4: EMR Project due Mon. Dec 7: Unit C Physics Test ![]() Last week, the science 30s completed the midterm exam and did quite well! In fact, the average on the midterm was 71% which is very impressive. I am so proud of the science 30s for working hard and focusing on what they have to do. After the midterm, we began into the 3rd unit of Science 30, Unit C Physics, which I find an extremely disjointed unit. We begin with the science of thunderstorms and then head into forces and fields. After that we dive into electrical energy and voltages, which leads us into an electric motor project! This week we will be working hard for 3 days, learning a Topic 1-5, due to the fact that I will be away Thursday, Friday. This will allow students to learn what they need to know, and they will have time to "catch up" and start on their projects Thursday Friday. This week in Science 30 Monday: Topic 1 Electric Fields (continued from Friday) Tuesday: Topic 3 Electric Circuit Lab (inquiry) Wednesday: Topic 4 & 5 Voltage and Resistance Thursday: Work Period / Motor Project Friday: Work Period / Motor Project Upcoming Due Dates Wed Nov 18: Case Study due Mon Nov 23: Circuit Quick Lab due Thurs Nov 26: Motor Project due Thurs Nov 26: Physics Quiz 1 ![]() Last week the science 30s completed the Unit B Chemistry unit, and I was very impressed with how well they did on the Unit test! Being one of the harder units in Science 30, this group's average on the test was 70%! As soon as the final 3 people write the test, the kids will be given their test back, to look over and study from! This week in Science 30, the students will have time to study for their midterm. I am encouraging them to take advantage of this study time, by printing out practice diplomas and asking them to test themselves, then review the information they do poorly on. Hopefully, they have started studying for this exam, as the Science 30 Midterm will take place on Thursday morning, second block. After we complete the midterm, we will get into Unit C: Physics, dealing mainly with forces, fields and electromagnetic radiation present throughout the universe. This unit is quite "mathy" so many students struggle with it, however it is quite applicable and interesting so that saves it. This week in Science 30 Monday: Review of Unit A / Unit B Tuesday: Mark Chemistry Projects in Class Wednesday: REMEMBRANCE DAY Thursday: SCIENCE 30 MIDTERM EXAM Friday: Unit C Topic 1 Gravitational and Magnetic Fields Upcoming Due Dates Tues Nov 10: Website Project due Thurs Nov 12: MIDTERM EXAM ![]() Last week the Science 30s worked through the organic chemistry part of Unit B Chemistry, and they had some fun learning organic chemistry! This week, the science 30s are going to be handed a summary project, in which they will be asked to create a website describing the effect of chemical pollutants in the environment. This website will be marked in a different way... each science 30 student will be given a quiz to complete while working off of another person's website and that mark will determine how well they did on the project (along with other things). We will also complete the Unit B Test for the Chemistry Unit. I should remind students to complete their corrections and rewrite the Chemistry quiz if they do not like the mark the achieved on the quiz. Quizzes are only rewritable prior to the unit test, during flex time. In order to rewrite a quiz, corrections must be completed and handed in at the time of the rewrite. This week in Science 30 Monday: Project Introduction Tuesday: Project Work Wednesday: Review of Unit Thursday: Unit B Chemistry Test Friday: Mark Projects Upcoming Due Dates Thurs Nov 5: Unit B Test Fri Nov 6: Website Project due |
