![]() Although the science 30s have really been unsuccessful in handing anything in this semester, it is my hope that this final project, with daily check ins, allows them to successfully use their time and complete the project. This alternative energies project replaces their unit test mark for Unit D, as there is less to test and more to understand and know in the final unit.... I am really hoping they pull up their socks and hand something in! Otherwise the diploma is going to be very difficult! The in class final for science 30 will be during the FLEX day Monday June 15. There is a diploma exam in the morning, and for that reason, the Science 30 final will be at 2pm on Monday afternoon. If the students do not show up for this exam, they will receive a zero on their in class final, which is worth 5% of their class mark. The more detrimental fact is that the final can replace the midterm mark if it is an improvement. I have seen students jump by 20% after this replacement, so it is beneficial for the science 30s to study and try hard on it! I would also suggest students sign up for the Science 30 diploma prep course. This is an additional course (with cost) that reminds them of all they need to know for the diploma, and all they seemed to have forgotten throughout the semester! I have found students who take diploma prep do between 10-15% better on the diploma than those who did not take the course! ![]() Last week the science 30s learned about the chemical energy released in a combustion reaction, and started to learn about nuclear reactions. Next week, we will compare the energy released between nuclear reactions and combustion reactions, and determine which are more efficient... hmmm... After this learning, the science 30s will be given time to work on their unit project, which is in place of their unit test for Unit D. This project consists of pre-learning research, and applying this research to a project that demonstrates social, scientific and technological aspects of their understanding. If the science 30s decide not to do this project, they will regret it, as it counts for 25% of their class grade. This project will contain daily check-points to ensure the kids are doing their work in class, and they will be given until June 9 to work on it. Not ONE student handed in the simple electromagnetic radiation project (EMR) project on time. The few projects I did receive were not done well. This project was supposed to be interactive and interesting... but simple... I just don't know how to motivate these kids! Not only do they not hand things in, a lot of days there are more than 5 students missing class. Science 30 is not simple enough to miss class and continue to be successful. The diploma at the end of the year is still a diploma exam so the students need to learn the material! Hopefully the students will be successful in the final unit of the semester, I will continue to attempt to engage the science 30s! They just have to show up! Room 1028 (Ms. Mogck's classroom) will be a full science department exhibition, featuring live chemistry labs, biology projects and physics experiments! ![]() We are finally finished physics... and we will start the next unit in a week! I have to say I have been consistently disappointed in the science 30s this semester, as they fail to complete assignments and in general don't put in the effort required to be successful in a diploma level science course. That being said, the final unit in science 30 is mainly student inquiry driven, so if they don't put in the work, they won't be successful on the diploma. This gets harder as the weather gets nicer and grad nears.... so here's to hoping! This is a mish-mash of information and really doesn't flow well together. The students should have their electric motor project completed, as they will be getting another project on Friday!
