![]() Last week, the science 30s performed a titration and worked on a project. This week, we will be fully engulfed in organic chemistry, which will be ALKYNES of fun ;) Before the break, the kids will be given an in class assignment, in order to assess what they have learned through the week. After the break, the science 30s will be given a unit test in chemistry and a week after that the midterm will be written. We are officially half done the curriculum as of this Thursday! YAY! This week in Science 30 Monday: Benzene and Toxic Chemicals Tuesday: Alcohols, Carboxylic Acids and Esters Wednesday: Ozone Depletions Thursday: In Class Assignment Upcoming Due Dates in Science Tuesday March 31: Titration Lab Due Thursday April 2: In Class Assignment Past Due: Oxides Project

![]() This week in science 30 we will be performing titrations and dealing with the students catching up on their work... hopefully! After that we are half way through the chemistry unit in science 30. And just a reminder, we are 9 days away from Spring Break, so hopefully the kids will push through and work hard! This week in Science 30 Monday: Titration Lab Tuesday: Titration Lab and Catch up Wednesday: Quiz 1 Thursday: Work Period (finish lab / project) Friday: Intro to OChem Upcoming Due Dates Wednesday March 25: Quiz 1 Part A Friday March 27: Oxides Project Due Monday March 30: Titration Lab Due Monday April 13: Organic In Class Assignment Friday April 17: Website Project Due Tuesday April 21: Unit B Exam Science 30 Midterm = Friday April 24, 2015 ![]() Last week the Science 30s got their first taste of chemistry... and I hope they are all as excited about it as I am (granted I do have an honors degree in chemistry so I should be excited about it!) This week, the kids will hopefully have handed in more of their (now) very late assignments, and are ready to stay on track until summer... riiiiiggghhhhttt..... So, what are we up to this week?! This week the science 30s will be working on a project in which they are going to investigate the different oxides produced by combustion reactions and what type of acid deposition and environmental havoc is created by oxides of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and metals. In the past, students have been less successful at this project, so I have tweaked it slightly to make it better! This week in Science 30 Tuesday: Oxides Project Wednesday: Oxides Project Thursday: Quantifying Acids Friday: Titration Review Upcoming Due Dates: Wednesday March 25: Chemistry Part 1 Quiz Thursday March 26: Oxides Project Due Tuesday April 14: Titration Lab Due ![]() After a full week of work periods, 30% of the class still has a mark below 50%! THIS IS OUTRAGIOUS!!!! The only reason people would be failing would be that they have not handed in assignments, which are zeros! Hopefully the class starts trying a little bit harder when the material becomes a little more difficult?! After the unit test on Tuesday, we will be starting the second unit in Science 30: Chemicals in the Environment! This unit students often find more difficult, as it introduces chemistry techniques learned in chem 20/30! I look forward to challenging the 30s a little bit more, as most of them haven't gone in depth into chemistry! This week in Science 30 Monday: Study Period Tuesday: UNIT TEST Wednesday: Acid Base Quick Lab Thursday: Theory of Acid Base Friday: Measuring Acids Upcoming Due Dates Tuesday: UNIT TEST Friday: Quick Lab Due Unit Test Format Total 70 Marks - 40 mc/nr/defs - 30 marks short answer (blood path / components of blood / immune response / lub dub / punnet squares / structure of DNA / mutations) ![]() We are coming to the end of Unit A: Biology. I find that most students find this section to be the easiest of the 4 units in science 30... Once we complete the biology section, we will be moving on to chemistry, dealing specifically with acid, base and organic chemistry. This section combines sections of chemistry 30, as well as math, and often students who struggle with numeracy find this type of learning more challenging. Students will be required to put more of an effort into labs and workbook assignments, as if they do not work on it, the learning will be lost. This week in science 30, we are finishing up with the genetics section of bio unit. I only received 3 labs of the 18 I was expecting that were due on Friday, so hopefully the kids get their overdue labs in as soon as possible. It is difficult to keep the marks up to date if students don't hand in their project on time! This Week in Science: Monday: Genetic Mutations Tuesday: Gene Therapy Inquiry Wednesday: Project Work Period Thursday: Review of Unit A Friday: Into to Unit B / Project Work Upcoming Due Dates: Friday March 6: Inquiry Based Project Due Tuesday March 10: Unit A Exam OVERDUE: Genetics Lab |
