![]() As we all have been aware of the tragedy of Jaydon Sommerfeld's passing, it is understandable that the school has taken measures to reduce the stress on students during this difficult time. As such we will be recommending that all students attempt to write exams but that all school based final exams will be write without risk, meaning that the students' marks will be calculated using the highest mark of either their final exam mark or letting their school based mark stand as their final grade. We are currently working with Alberta Education about requesting exemptions for diploma exams and we will be communicating that as soon as we have an answer. Science 24 Final Exam: WEDNESDAY JUNE 17

Last week, the science 24s completed unit D, and completed a quiz to end it all.
This Thursday is the final class in science 24, with 3 flex days to follow. Students who are not passing the course, or are not happy with their mark, will be asked to come in and complete missing assignments and rewrites. This week in Chem 20 Monday: Review of Science 24 Tuesday: Review of Science 24 Wednesday: Review of Science 24 Thursday: Review of Science 24 Friday: FLT WEDNESDAY JUNE 17, 8:30am-11:00am SCIENCE 24 FINAL EXAM I was again very impressed by the science 24's achievement on the Biology unit test. They did very well, and were extremely successful at understanding difficult concepts like genetics and immunity!
This week, the science 24s will be performing many physics labs involving running (or walking) to determine velocity and distance. The 24s will be required to graphically analyze their movements. This is the final unit for the science 24s, and after that, we will be heading into review of the semester. This week in Science 24 Monday: Velocity Tuesday: Graphing Velocity Wednesday: Chapter Review Thursday: Velocity Quiz Friday: Review of Velocity Last week, the science 24s learned about genetics, and performed a survey lab to determine the occurrence of specific genes within Chestermere High. At the end of the week, they created their own genetically modified creatures: for example the Wolphin, a combination of a whale and dolphin, and the Mercat, a combination of a cat and a mermaid. It was very fun!
This week, we will be looking more into genetic engineering, and we will complete the Biology unit. Friday, we will be moving on to the final unit in Science 24: Travel Safety (physics). This week in science 24: Monday: Genetic Modification and Mutation Tuesday: Genetic technologies / Unit Review Wednesday: Unit Review / Work Period Thursday: Unit C Test Friday: Intro to Unit D Upcoming due dates: Thursday May 28: Unit C Test Friday May 29: Genetics Lab due ![]() Last week, the science 24s learned about the immune system and immune response. I really feel like they learned how our bodies protect us from pathogens and we stay healthy! I was very impressed! This coming week, we will be diving into genetics! I hope the science 24s enjoy this Genetics topic as much as they enjoyed the immune response! We will start with a genetic survey, that will introduce the concept and from there, dive into the molecular level genetics and inheritance! This week in Science 24: Tuesday: Biology Quiz 1 Wednesday: Genetics Survey Lab Thursday: Topic 1 Intro to Genetics Friday: Topic 2 Inheritance Upcoming due dates: Tuesday May 19: Biology Quiz 1 Tuesday May 26: Selective Breeding Diagram due Please remember to come check out the exhibition of learning Wednesday May 20 from 5-8pm at the school. Room 1028 (Ms. Mogck's classroom) will be a full science department exhibition, featuring live chemistry labs, biology projects and physics experiments! ![]() This week in science 24 we will be discussing the immune system, but first I have to make sure the kids understand why we watched movies all last week! Monday, I will be at a conference, and the students will be expected to complete the Chapter Questions dealing with Epidemics and Pandemics. After that we will get into the immune response. I really think this is some of the most interesting and applicable learning in science 24, as we will be discussing vaccinations and allergies along with learning how our bodies naturally respond to pathogen attacks! I promise the kids will have NO HOMEWORK for the long weekend (not that I give homework to them ever!) This week in Science 24: Monday: Chapter Review Tuesday: Intro to Immune System Wednesday: Vaccines and Allergies Thursday: Finish up Immune Response Upcoming due dates Tuesday May 12: Mark Chapter Review This week is the movie study for science 24s! We will be analyzing the movie OUTBREAK do start our discussion on epidemics, and CONTAGION to discuss pandemics. This week should be a fun easy week for science 24!
![]() I'm sure a few of you heard about Friday's science class after school... I tried my hardest to freak the kids out and scare them into being safe and healthy. On Friday in science 24, we started the biology unit (Unit C), and we began class discussing pathogens. We discussed good bacteria and bad bacteria, discussing yogurt and e.coli... then we discussed Viruses. This is where we got into HIV/AIDS and discussed safe sex practices and how to avoid contracting a horrible virus like HIV. I was very shocked to hear how naive many of the students in class were with regards to what "safe sex" truly included. It became similar to a sex ed discussion... and then we got into protists and fungi and grossed them out further with discussions regarding dysentery (amoebic) and athletes food. When I discussed "thrush" - the fungal yeast infection of the mouth, many of the students nearly lost their breakfast... All in all it was a very fun discussion and I effectively helped to scare many of the kids into abstinence (I hope!) This week should be just as fun, as we are going to get into concepts regarding who is more likely to get sick, and create a public awareness campaign to help people stay healthy and clean! Next week, we will be beginning the movie study on epidemic and pandemic diseases for ‘Unit C: Disease Defence and Human Health.’ The movies that we will be comparing for our video study are; Contagion (2011); Suggested Rating: PG-13 for disturbing content and some language Outbreak (1995); Suggested Rating: R for disturbing images/content, language and some intense action If you do not want your student to take part in the movie study, please contact me via email or phone to discuss this and make appropriate accommodations. This Week in Science 24 Monday: Who is Likely to Get Sick? Tuesday: Preventing Disease Wednesday: Public Awareness Project Thursday: Public Awareness Project Friday: Chapter Review Upcoming Due Dates Friday May 1: Public Awareness Project Monday May 4: Chapter Review Questions due This week in science 24 we will be finishing up the chemistry unit and moving on to the biology section! This marks the half way point in science 24, and I have been pleasantly surprised at how terrific the class has been. Hopefully, we can continue this positive energy through the rest of the year!
This week in science 24 Monday: Pollution Solutions and Greenhouse Effect Tuesday: Acid Rain and Rusting Wednesday: Review of Unit A (game) Thursday: Unit A Exam Friday: Intro to Biology Upcoming Due Dates Thursday April 23: Unit B Exam and Booklet Check ![]() Hopefully everyone had a relaxing and fun spring break! I know that the kids had absolutely NO SCIENCE HOMEWORK, so they should be ready to rock in the classroom... right?! This week in science 24, we will be learning (quite possibly) the most difficult section of the entire year... Balancing chemical equations. Luckily, from here it gets easier! Often times kids struggle with balancing equations up to university. It seems very hard, but I think I have come up with a fool-proof system for these 24s to be successful... CANDY! This week in Science 24: Monday: Writing Word Equations Tuesday: Common Chemical Reactions Wednesday: Balancing Chemical Reactions Thursday: Balancing (continued) Friday: Chapter Review Upcoming Due Dates: Friday April 17: Chapter Review to mark in class |
