![]() I'm sure a few of you heard about Friday's science class after school... I tried my hardest to freak the kids out and scare them into being safe and healthy. On Friday in science 24, we started the biology unit (Unit C), and we began class discussing pathogens. We discussed good bacteria and bad bacteria, discussing yogurt and e.coli... then we discussed Viruses. This is where we got into HIV/AIDS and discussed safe sex practices and how to avoid contracting a horrible virus like HIV. I was very shocked to hear how naive many of the students in class were with regards to what "safe sex" truly included. It became similar to a sex ed discussion... and then we got into protists and fungi and grossed them out further with discussions regarding dysentery (amoebic) and athletes food. When I discussed "thrush" - the fungal yeast infection of the mouth, many of the students nearly lost their breakfast... All in all it was a very fun discussion and I effectively helped to scare many of the kids into abstinence (I hope!) This week should be just as fun, as we are going to get into concepts regarding who is more likely to get sick, and create a public awareness campaign to help people stay healthy and clean! Next week, we will be beginning the movie study on epidemic and pandemic diseases for ‘Unit C: Disease Defence and Human Health.’ The movies that we will be comparing for our video study are; Contagion (2011); Suggested Rating: PG-13 for disturbing content and some language Outbreak (1995); Suggested Rating: R for disturbing images/content, language and some intense action If you do not want your student to take part in the movie study, please contact me via email or phone to discuss this and make appropriate accommodations. This week in science 24 we will be finishing up the chemistry unit and moving on to the biology section! This marks the half way point in science 24, and I have been pleasantly surprised at how terrific the class has been. Hopefully, we can continue this positive energy through the rest of the year!
This week in science 24 Monday: Pollution Solutions and Greenhouse Effect Tuesday: Acid Rain and Rusting Wednesday: Review of Unit A (game) Thursday: Unit A Exam Friday: Intro to Biology Upcoming Due Dates Thursday April 23: Unit B Exam and Booklet Check ![]() Hopefully everyone had a relaxing and fun spring break! I know that the kids had absolutely NO SCIENCE HOMEWORK, so they should be ready to rock in the classroom... right?! This week in science 24, we will be learning (quite possibly) the most difficult section of the entire year... Balancing chemical equations. Luckily, from here it gets easier! Often times kids struggle with balancing equations up to university. It seems very hard, but I think I have come up with a fool-proof system for these 24s to be successful... CANDY! This week in Science 24: Monday: Writing Word Equations Tuesday: Common Chemical Reactions Wednesday: Balancing Chemical Reactions Thursday: Balancing (continued) Friday: Chapter Review Upcoming Due Dates: Friday April 17: Chapter Review to mark in class |
