Last week I welcomed 28 new students into chem 30. I told them that sometimes it is going to be hard, and sometimes it will be boring, and sometimes they are going to hate me. But they will be prepared for the diploma exam, in fact they will feel confident going into the diploma exam in June. And they will be prepared to enter the sciences (if they choose to do so) in university.
I also made sure to mention that my tests, although difficult, are simply written response diploma exam questions that assess the outcomes from the curriculum. The students will be given weekly quizzes with similar style questions so they feel a little bit more confident in their understanding of the style of questions.
Finally, I asked the chem 30s that no matter what they may have heard, to please give me a chance to teach them chem 30, given that they likely have only heard the bad... kids don't tend to blab about the good stuff in class, but they are sure to vocalize the bad!
So here we go!
