![]() Last week in chemistry 30, we completed the second of 4 units in chem 30. Complete with a unit test, that (for some) did not go so well. After going over the test on Friday in class with the kids, they are well aware that the test was fair, and in order to rewrite (if they are eligible) students will have to complete test corrections. The rewrite is Monday November 9th after school from 4pm-5:30pm. Again, in order to rewrite, students must have handed in their projects and labs on time! So hopefully they did just that! This week, the chem 30s take on the midterm exam. The midterm in chemistry 30 is worth 15% of their overall class mark, and will cover thermochemistry and electrochemistry. The students have 2 work periods to study and work on corrections during class time. They also have time to complete any missing or late projects. I have provided more than 10 different study guides and questions to allow students to be well prepared for this midterm exam. That also means, the chem 30s will have zero labs this week! So they will stop complaining about how much work they have to do! This week in Chem 30 Monday: Study / Work period Tuesday: Study / Work period Wednesday: MIDTERM EXAM Thursday: Intro to Alkanes Friday: Work Period Upcoming Due Dates Wed Nov 4: MIDTERM EXAM Mon Nov 9: Electrochem Unit B Rewrite (after school)

Even though the test may have been fair, I'm not sure with a class average of 54, how much knowledge they have. I know a student who puts in a great deal of effort and is obviously learning very little.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I find most often students need time for the understanding to develop in their brain... and reinforce those pathways by revision of unit tests and discussion. This is the reason I have rewrites in chemistry 30. It is a very difficult course, but I do understand it may take students a little while to "get it". If a student chooses not to take advantage of rewrites, that is their choice.
