![]() Last week, after the acid base unit test, the chem 30s were introduced to organic chemistry. Because this unit is very theoretical and there are no calculations in the work, many students take this unit lightly.... that is a bad idea. Often times, the diploma exam focuses on organic chem theory, which students neglect, and it is detrimental to their marks. I will have to encourage the chem 30s to stay focused through the final unit, and work hard until the very end... especially difficult with grad on the horizon... The chem 30s have been given an inquiry project based on the industrial processing of organic molecules to ensure they meet the societal connection of the curriculum. That being said, in the two work periods they had to work on the project, I have not seen much work being done. I have high hopes that the students will complete the project, not to get a good mark, but to get the understanding down for the diploma... This week in chem 30 Tuesday: Topic 3 Alkanes Wednesday: Topic 6 Alkenes and Alkynes Thursday: Topic 4&5 Isomers and Cyclos Friday: Topic 7 Aromatics Upcoming due dates Thursday May 21: Acid Base Rewrite Wednesday May 27: Quiz 1 (topic 1-8) Friday May 29: OChem Project due Monday June 1: Optional Replacement Project due Please remember to come check out the exhibition of learning Wednesday May 20 from 5-8pm at the school. Room 1028 (Ms. Mogck's classroom) will be a full science department exhibition, featuring live chemistry labs, biology projects and physics experiments!
