![]() We have 5 days of classes until winter break! 5 days to learn the two final lessons of chem 30, perform (yet another) lab and get the final project for Unit 4. On the bright side, we will be done the curricular outcomes before Christmas break. That means will be coming back from break to work periods and the unit test, and that's it! Please remember that this week is still classroom work time, and not holiday party time (trust me its hard for me too!) but we have things to get done in chem 30! This week in Chem 30 Monday: Topic 6 Buffers Tuesday: Work Period / Assembly Wednesday: Topic 7 Titration Curves Thursday: Titration Lab Friday: Work Period / Finish Lab Upcoming Due Dates in Chem 30 Fri Dec 18: Buffer Lab Due (+5%) Wed Jan 6: Unit D Test Fri Jan 8: Titration Lab due Mon Jan 11: Equilibrium Project Due Thurs Jan 13: IN CLASS FINAL EXAM (5% of Mark)

![]() Thank you to everyone who came out to the Exhibition of Learning on Thursday night! It was so much fun to see everyone outside of the classroom! Last week the students wrote their third unit test (Unit C Organic Chemistry) and overall most students did very very well; I was very impressed! After that the chem 30s learned a lot of acid base equilibrium and received their first (of three) labs for this Unit D Acid Base Equilibrium. I will admit that this is by far the most important and difficult unit in chemistry 30, and for this reason there are a lot of labs, projects and work in general for students to complete. At the same time, I do provide ample opportunity for students to work in class, and they have FLT to ask any questions they have. The curriculum learning will be completed prior to Christmas break, so the kids will have enough time to review, complete missing labs and in general prepare for the difficult unit test, in class final and inevitable Diploma Exam. All work will be given prior to winter break, to allow students the option to work on their chemistry over this free time (although it is not require nor expected that they will do so). This week in Chem 30 Monday: Work Period Tuesday: Topic 5 ICE Tables Wednesday: Work Period Thursday: Acid Base Quiz 1 (topic 1-5) Friday: Topic 6 Buffers Upcoming Due Dates for Chem 30 Wed Dec 9 (after school): Unit C REWRITE Thurs Dec 10: Quiz 1 Fri Dec 11: Indicator Lab due Fri Dec 18: Buffer Lab due (for 5% added) I have also come up with a plan of attack for students to successfully work on their lab reports that are due, as many students complain that they are very busy. If they are using their time appropriately in class, it is possible to complete all workbook problems in the given 45minutes every class. This leaves FLT time, or homework time for students to work on the lab report. I have broken the lab into chunks so that students realize that one hour of "homework" a day in chemistry (YES I SAID 1 HOUR) goes a long way overall. The advised chunking for this lab would be as follows: Weekend Work: ANALYSIS of RESULTS (max 2 hours) Monday: Error Analysis + Follow Up Questions Tuesday: Background Information + Objective + Hypothesis Wednesday: Variables + Experimental Results + Sources Thursday: Fix up anything you are missing and look it over Friday: Hand in lab Hope you have a great week this week!!! |
