Many parents, students, subs and even teachers are surprised that we have a flex day this Thursday, November 3. So, what is this flex day all about? The FLT day on Thursday will allow students with half semester courses that required time to study or finish up incomplete assignments prior to starting a new term course. It also allows students in full semester courses a chance to catch up on what they are missing, either in work, or in understanding.
I am not forcing any of my classes to come in for FLT. Students are welcome to come in to class and ask questions, work on their project or study for summative #2! I would encourage this (although it must be during their specified block as my other classes have the same option). All in all, I am hoping that the 30s decide to take advantage of this extra free study day, and head on into my class for the FLT time provided! (But it's not mandatory!)

![]() Last week, the chem 30s made my heart swell. They APPLIED what they had learned about voltaic cells and SUCCESSFULLY created 3 batteries using only metal and solution! So GREAT JOB! This week, we will hopefully continue that trend, as the chem 30s have to build 2 electrolytic cells using given materials and their understanding of the topics learned on Friday. Fingers crossed it goes just as well! After that, the chem 30s will learn the final topic in Unit B and start getting ready for their summative #2! Yikes! Half way through chem 30! This Week in Chem 30 Monday: Electrolytic Cell Quick Lab Tuesday: Topic 8 Faraday's Law Wednesday: Work Period (Ms Mogck @ PD) Thursday: FLT Day (not mandatory) Friday: Quiz Topic 4-8 Upcoming Due Dates Fri Nov 4: Quiz Topic 4-8 Thurs Nov 10: Summative #2 Tues Nov 15: Project #1 due ![]() Last week, the chem 30s seemed to struggle with the electrochemistry concepts. Not many of the students were successful on the quiz on Thursday, but when I asked the question "If I were to look in your booklets, how many of you would pass a homework check???" 2 students raised their hands. Not surprisingly, these are the 2 students that rocked the quiz on Thursday! Hopefully, this taught the grade 12s a lesson in work ethic, and I won't have to give them that guilt trip again! This week, the chem 30s will apply their newly developed understanding of electrochem to voltaic and electrolytic cells! We won't have a quiz this week in class, because we miss Thursday due to an assembly. This Week in Chem 30 Monday: Project / Review work time Tuesday: Topic 6 Voltaic Cells Wednesday: Voltaic Cell Quick Lab (pt1) Thursday: Assembly :) Friday: Topic 7 Electrolytic Cells Upcoming Due Dates Mon Oct 24: Titration Quick Lab due Thurs Nov 3: Quiz Topic 4-8 Thurs Nov 3: Cell Quick Lab due Thurs Nov 10: Summative 2 (Unit A/B) Tues Nov 15: A/B Project due Fri Nov 18: Breathalyzer Lab due ![]() Last week, the chem 30s experienced electrochemistry happening in a lab. I will admit it was SUPER boring, but very important to understand how theoretical developed the now accepted chemistry. This week, the chem 30s will learn how to balance electrochemical equations (not as easy as it sounds) and apply what they know about REDOX chemistry to stiochiometric analysis! Very fun, but this is where the chemistry gets tough! This week in Chem 30 Monday: Topic 4 Balancing in Acid Tuesday: Redox Stoich Wednesday: Redox Titration Quick Lab Thursday: Quiz (Topic 1-3) Friday: Redox Project Work Time Upcoming Due Dates Mon Oct 17: Spontaneity Quick Lab due Wed Oct 19: Unit A Rewrite After School I know it's a busy 3 days for a lot of students, with band camp and an art field trip, please remind your student that it is up to them to make up the lessons they have missed. That means, coming in for FLT to complete missed labs or lessons! This week, the chem 30s will continue on with the electrochemistry we began before Thanksgiving! It should be a fun week, as the lessons are interesting and fun (I think!)
Reminder: in order to rewrite unit tests, the chem 30s must have handed in all labs and assignments on time. If your son or daughter has done so, then they are welcome to rewrite the unit test NEXT week, but all test corrections must be completed prior to next Tuesday (during FLT only!) This week in Chem 30 Wednesday: Spontaneity Quick Lab Thursday: Topic 3 Spontaneity Friday: Electrochemical Project Introduction Upcoming Due Dates Friday Oct 14: Spontaneity Quick Lab due Wednesday Oct 19: Unit A REWRITE After School Thursday Oct 20: Unit B Quiz Topic 1-4 ![]() This is a big week for the chem 30s! Tomorrow morning, bright and early, they have their first Unit Test. This exam was supposed to be on Friday, but the post-secondary fair was Friday, during chem class, and obviously that is slightly important to grade 12s. So the exam is tomorrow. I know a lot of kids have been practicing and studying hard! After the exam, we will dive right into Unit B: Electrochemistry! This unit is worth 30% of the diploma exam, so it is one of the 2 larger units. Many students find this unit difficult, as it is very theoretical: in fact there is only one calculation in this entire unit! On the bright side, electrochemistry is very applicable to life! Photosynthesis, combustion, rust, batteries... oh my! All electrochemistry! This week in Chem 30 Monday: Unit A THERMOCHEM Test Tuesday: Topic 1 REDOX Wednesday: Topic 2 Oxidation Numbers Thursday: Work Period Upcoming Due Dates Monday Oct 3: UNIT A TEST Thurs Oct 6: Calorimeter Lab due HAPPY THANKSGIVING! |
