Last week in chem 30, we completed the last bit of the learning in the unit, and the kids handed in their first of 2 quick labs! I have worked my little tail off to mark and complete the comments on their first lab... and it's looking to be a late night for me!
So this week, the chem 30s will put the learning together in their own inquiry based lab, in which they have to demonstrate their understanding of thermochemistry and calorimetry. The class has been split into groups of 3 or 4. They will plan their lab Monday, and perform it Tuesday! After that, the 30s will have work / study time for the rest of the week, in preparation for their Unit A Test Friday. This week in Chem 30 Monday: Prepare Inquiry Based Lab Tuesday: Perform Inquiry Based Lab Wednesday: Review of Unit Thursday: Study / Work Period Friday: Unit A Thermochemistry Test Upcoming Due Dates Mon Sept 26: Marshmallow Quick Lab due Fri Sept 30: Unit A Exam Thurs Oct 6: Inquiry Lab due

Last week, the students had their first quiz in chem 30, and it was a big jump from the kinds of questions many of the students experienced in chem 20. The reason quizzes are not worth marks in chem 30, is to ensure these assessments are low risk, allowing students to see and try diploma style questions, without being punished. They are able to retake this quiz as many times as they want, and until the exam they are able to rewrite the quiz (after completing corrections). So hopefully they are not freaking out, because its ok to fail, as long as they learn from their mistakes!
This week in chem 30 we will finish the first unit; this does not mean there is an exam any time soon, it simply means that I will have directly taught them the unit, and it is now up to the students to let the learning marinate and take hold (and understanding) in their brains! Reminder, the Terry Fox run is this Friday, and if you have pledged to donate, you can use the link http://www.terryfox.ca/ChestermereHigh to donate today! This week in Chemistry 30 Monday: Work Period Tuesday: Topic 6 Everyday Calorimetry Wednesday: Marshmallow Quick Lab Thursday: Quiz 2 Topic 5-6 Friday: Topic 7 Energy Exchanges Upcoming Due Dates: Tues Sept 20: Calorimeter Quick Lab due Mon Sept 26: Marshmallow Quick Lab due Fri Sept 30: Unit A Test (Summative #1) Tues Oct 4: Thermochem Inquiry Based Fuel Comparison Lab due Last week the chem 30s jumped full into the chemistry 30 curriculum and Unit A Thermochemistry! With the back to school assembly and the welcome back breakfast, we had a busy week, not only in class. As we move forward, it will get slightly more difficult, but it is my hope that the chem 30s will use their resources, and the new format of my class, to the best of their ability!
This week, we will continue with inquiry based learning into Calorimetry. What we have learned so far, with regards to enthalpy, have all been building towards the first lab, which we will be performing Wednesday! This will be the first of the formative quick labs, to allow students to create parts of a lab report and be provided with feedback, rather than being marked. If a student chooses not to hand in a quick lab on time, they will not receive this important feedback, and thus, likely not do as well on the first of 4 major labs this year. (In other words, although not for marks, these labs are super important!) Thursday, the chem 30s will have their first formative assessment, a quiz. This will cover the thermochemistry concept of enthalpy learned in class, but it will not count on the student's overall grade. Instead, it will let me see where they need more help and learning, and let the students see the types of questions that might be on a summative assessment. This week in Chem 30 Monday: Hess' Law Activity (Topic 4) Tuesday: Calorimeter Challenge Lab Wednesday: Perform Calorimeter Lab Thursday: Quiz 1 (Topic 1-4) and Review Friday: Calorimetry (Topic 5) Upcoming Due Dates Tues Sept 20: Calorimeter Quick Lab Due ![]() Hello Everyone! Welcome to Chem 30 with Ms. Mogck! I am looking forward to an exciting new year full of chem activities! This website is super handy for both students AND parents, to see what is going on in class, and as a resource. If you look around the site, you can find notes, videos, extra practice and just about anything to do with my classroom throughout the year! This website will be updated weekly to allow parents to see what is coming up during the week, and any future assessments! This year, I am teaching chemistry a little bit differently, in hopes of reducing student anxiety and improving student interest and understanding of chemistry! Instead of taking in a million tiny assignments, the only things that will influence a student's mark are major labs, assignments and cumulative tests. There will be additional assignments and weekly quizzes (Thursdays) that will be assessed, to allow students to improve on their understanding, however these will not influence their overall grade in the class. Instead, students will be provided with comments, suggestions and complete answers to demonstrate successful achievement of outcomes. If a student chooses not to hand in an assignment on time (that is not for marks), they will simply not receive the feedback that will assist them in doing better on the major assessments. This will also effect their ability to rewrite the cumulative tests (as per the science department assessment policy). The following breakdown is how chemistry 30 will be graded this semester: 4 Full Lab Reports (40%) 4 Major Projects (20%) 4 Cumulative Tests (32%) In Class Final Exam (8%) Hopefully this will be a great year! If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at your earliest convenience! This week in Chem 30 Tuesday: Heat Capacity (Topic 1) Wednesday: Enthalpy (Topic 2) Thursday: Reaction Enthalpy (Topic 3) Friday: Hess' Law (Topic 4) Kendra Mogck kmogck@rvschools.ab.ca Science Dept Learning Lead Chestermere High School |
