![]() This week marks big things in Chem 30: It's the first unit test of the year and... yes... Parent Teacher Interview Time! I will be emailing parents to ask them to come in for an interview if in fact your child is unfortunately failing my class. The reason a student is failing this early in the semester is purely based on work ethic and not on capability, and luckily, it is early enough to turn it around! So keep checking power school and make sure your son or daughter is handing in their work and keeping up in class! This week, as I mentioned, is the Chem 30s first major assessment: the Unit A Thermochemistry Test will be given on Tuesday September 29th. This means we are about 20% done the chem 30 curriculum (already!) After that, we will be moving on to Unit B: Electrochemistry, which is just "shocking" for students ;) Prior to the Thanksgiving break, the chem 30s will be given their first quiz for Unit B, this will ensure that they have no homework over the break, so you can enjoy the holiday family time together! This Week in Chem 30 Monday: Work / Study Period Tuesday: Unit A THERMOCHEM TEST Wednesday: Topic 1 REDOX Thursday: Topic 2 Oxidation Numbers Friday: Spontaneity Quick Lab Upcoming Due Dates: Tues Sept 29: UNIT A TEST Wed Sept 30: Fuel Combustion Lab due THURS OCT 1: 5pm-8pm PTIs Tues Oct 6: Spontaneity Quick Lab due Thursday Oct 8: Unit B Quiz 1

![]() Things are really starting to HEAT UP in chemistry 30! Last week, the chem 30s completed their first of 3 thermochemistry labs, and the first lab write up is due Monday! This report will allow me to provide meaningful feedback so that the 30s are able to write an effective lab report for the rest of the semester (and beyond!) This week, we will be doing 1 delicious lab, and one fuel lab (hopefully not so delicious!) After that, we will be completing the first unit in chemistry 30 and be moving on to Unit B next week! It's finally time! Starting Monday, kids are able to move during their FLEX time, this will allow students better opportunity to come in for help (thank goodness!) Hopefully the 30s are taking advantage of all this extra time, and they will be busying me with questions and inquiry! This week in Chem 30 Monday: Marshmallow Quick Lab Tuesday: Topic 7: Energy Exchange Wednesday: Comparison of Fuel Lab Thursday: Practice Test (booklet) Friday: Work Period (labs) Upcoming Due Dates: Monday September 21: Calorimeter Challenge Lab due Thursday September 24: Marshmallow Quick Lab due Tuesday September 29: UNIT A THERMOCHEM TEST Wednesday September 30: Fuel Comparison Lab due You probably did not giggle as hard as I did with that title, unless you have a good understanding of chemistry. A bomb calorimeter is a device used to determine the amount of energy released in a chemical reaction, so it is used to determine something as extreme as the amount of damage a bomb may cause if dropped, or something as simple as the number of calories you eat when you gobble up that delicious piece of chocolate cake! This week is all about calorimetry in chem 30! The kids will begin with their lab on Monday, have a quick quiz on Tuesday and move on to calorimetry for the rest of the week!
Last week, the kids encountered their first exit slip of the year, and it told me a lot!! It told me that the chemistry 30 classes have not realized they are in chem 30, and that they will have to put in a little bit more work than they had before (in chem 20) to be successful! Hopefully with that little kick in the pant, the 30s will now be on the right track in chemistry! This week in chem 30: Monday: Calorimetry Lab Tuesday: Unit A Quiz 1 (Topic 1-4) Wednesday: Topic 5 Calorimetry Thursday: Topic 6 Everyday Calorimetry Friday: Work Period (Ms. Mogck Away for Volleyball) Upcoming Due Dates: Tuesday September 15: Quiz 1 Monday September 21: Calorimeter Lab due Thursday September 24: Calorimeter quick lab due Monday September 28: Fuel Calorimetry lab due Tuesday September 29: Unit A Test (Thermochem) ![]() After a busy introductory week, we will be getting into the grit of chem 30! Hopefully the kids' schedules have all been worked out. All I ask is that students give me a chance to change their mind about chemistry; because it's actually awesome! This Week in Chem 30 Tuesday: Work period (Topic 1-2) Wednesday: Topic 3 Reaction Enthalpy Thursday: Topic 4 Hess' Law Friday: Calorimeter Challenge Lab Prep Upcoming Due Dates: Friday Sept 11: WHMIS due Friday Sept 11:Signed Course Outline due Tuesday Sept 15: Quiz 1 Topic 1-4 Monday Sept 21: Calorimeter Challenge Lab due |
