![]() This weekend, we were again devastated with the loss of Quinton Peplinski, CHS Alumni, and all around amazing young man. This will no doubt bring up some major feelings for students, and drudge up memories of June for others. With a potential funeral this week, the plan may be interrupted if students need to attend the funeral, however this week the chem 30s are given time to study for their midterm exam on Thursday March 31. I am away at Nationals for Boxing in Quebec City this week, but may end up coming home early if things don't go as planned. If students have questions, please encourage them to email me! This Week in Chem 30 Tuesday-Wednesday: Group Study Periods Thursday: Midterm Exam (Unit A/B) Friday: OChem Inquiry Chart Assignment Upcoming Due Dates: Thursday March 31: Chem 30 Midterm Exam Monday April 4: Inquiry Chart due

It seems like my chem 20s and chem 30s are having the same activities this week. So I can just repeat what's going on for both ;)
Last week, we finished up Unit B Electrochemistry learning. The kids performed an awesome lab in which they had to figure out how to create a voltaic and electrolytic cell and they handed in their titration labs. All successful. This week, the students will have Monday and Tuesday to work on their lab and study for their unit test. Wednesday, the chem 30s will be writing their exam. That means the chem 30s will have no homework and nothing to think about over the break... unless they want to study for the midterm... This week in Chem 30 Monday: Work Period / Study Tuesday: Work Period / Study Wednesday: Unit B Electrochem Test Upcoming Due Dates: Wednesday March 23: Cell Lab due Wednesday March 23: UNIT B TEST Thursday April 31: CHEM 30 MIDTERM Happy Easter Everyone! Enjoy you 5 day weekend!!! ![]() We have reached the half way point of unit B. That means we have completed approximately 25% of the entire chem 30 curriculum. That also means it's time for a quiz and a little application of the science. I will admit, last week I was quite concerned with the lack of understanding by the chem 30s. I'm not sure if it was because many of the kids were focusing on lab completion and not working on their homework, but I can see they are trying. What I did notice on Friday, is that the kids are working on their practice questions with the key open right in front of them. This does not actually help kids in the learning process. In fact, it tricks the students' brain into thinking they know what's going on, when in reality there is no understanding. Now I can bring my proof of the exit slip. On Friday, the kids were given an exit slip with 5 multiple choice questions, and the average was 30%. So, I am going to have a chat with the chem 30s after their quiz tomorrow about effective study habits! Woohoo. This week in Chem 30 Monday: Quiz 1 (Topic 1-5) Tuesday: Voltaic Cells Wednesday: Electrolytic Cells Thursday: Cell Inquiry Lab Friday: In Class Assignment Upcoming Due Dates Mon Mar 14: Unit B Quiz 1 (Topic 1-5) Thurs Mar 16: Redox Titration Lab due Wed Mar 23: Cell Inquiry Lab due Wed Mar 23: Unit B ELECTROCHEM TEST ![]() After this week, chem 30s will be half way through electrochemistry. So far, so good.... I think... This week, the chem 30s will have the opportunity to rewrite their Thermochemistry Unit A Test THURSDAY, March 10 AFTER SCHOOL, prior to PTIs. I am hopeful that they will take advantage of this opportunity (as long as they handed in their labs on time and are given the option). This week in chem 30, the kids will be learning about spontaneity with a quick lab on Monday, and finishing up the week with a titration on Thursday! Should be a fun week! Please book a parent teaching interview for Thursday this week if you have any concerns or questions! This week in Chem 30: Monday: Spontaneity Lab Tuesday: Redox in Solution Wednesday: Redox Stoichiometry Thursday: Redox Titration Lab Friday: Work Period Upcoming Due Dates in Chem 30 Tues Mar 8: Spontaneity Quick Lab due |
