![]() With only 3 weeks of school until winter break, it's about the time when students begin realizing they are running out of time! It is also that time when things get really really busy in school! This week alone we have a PD Day, Winter Formal and another assembly! It is important for students to try to stay on top of their work, if they do, they really won't have much over break (other than an optional project)! Originally, the chemistry 20 Unit C Test was scheduled for Friday, December 4, however I do realize that many of the grade 11s are going as dates to the Winter Formal, and there are 3 grade 12s in the class who will be attending the Winter Formal for sure ;) For that reason, the exam has been moved to Tuesday, December 9. We will have to start the next unit Monday, as we are in a time crunch and I would like to get the unit completed before Christmas! This Week in Chem 20: Tuesday: pH of Acids and Bases Wednesday: Measuring pH Thursday: Review of 1st Half of Solutions Friday: Review of 2nd Half of Solutions (Acid Base) Upcoming Due Dates in Chem 20 Wednesday December 3: Cabbage Lab Due Tuesday December 9: Unit C Test (Solutions + Acid Base) Wednesday December 17: Titration Quick Lab Due Friday December 19: LAST DAY OF CLASSES IN 2014

![]() This week chem 20s will be getting into the acid base portion of chemistry 20. This is a very important half of the unit in chem 20, as it leads into the very difficult unit of Acid Base Equilibrium in chemistry 30. If students struggle with this section of 20, chemistry 30 may not be the best option next year... That being said, this part of unit C is very interesting, and lends itself to many different labs! Yay! Please remember the Chestermere High School Showcase of Learning will be occurring Wednesday, November 26 from 5pm-8pm. This semester, the science department will be displaying many projects from different areas of learning, including Chem 20 Molecule Projects and Ideal Gas Labs, Chem 30 Equilibrium and Redox Projects, Bio 30 Gene to Protein Projects, Science 24 Mouse-Trap Cars and Physics 20 Force Labs. These displays will demonstrate the outstanding Project Based Learning going on in the Science Department. We will also have Chem 30s on hand to teach visitors how to perform a titration lab, which is a common technique in any chemistry class! Please stop by Room 1028 (Ms. Mogck's Classroom) during your visit to learn some exciting new science techniques! This week in Chem 20: Monday: Science 10 Review of Acids and Bases Tuesday: 1/2 Point Quiz Wednesday: Cabbage Lab Thursday: Arrhenius Acid Base Chemistry Friday: pH of Acids and Bases Upcoming Due Dates: Monday November 24: PBL Video Explanation for Extra Credit due Tuesday November 25: 1/2 Point Quiz for Unit C: Solutions Wednesday November 26: CHS Exhibition of Learning Thursday November 27: SQA Lab due Wednesday December 3: Cabbage Lab due Friday December 5: Unit C Solutions Test ![]() After a very short week last week, this week should be busy! We are currently learning about solution concentrations in chem 20, and for that reason, it is easy to perform labs associated with this concept. Upon finishing this week's activities we will be half finished the 3rd unit in chem 20, and 4 weeks away from completing the course! This may cause students to have a little bit of anxiety... so please remember that if you are feeling overwhelmed, to please come speak to me. There are no late marks in chem 20, and this is to alleviate unnecessary stress in chemistry. It is also important to remember to use flex time appropriately. The 40 minutes a day to use is for students to be able to discuss topics with their teachers in a more individualized fashion. For that reason it is important that students use this time to the best of their advantage! This will become more challenging as we move towards the holidays, as it is easy to become distracted with all the festivities going on! This week in chem 20 Monday: Biomagnification Project Tuesday: Biomagnification Project Wednesday: Solubility Thursday: Systemic Qualitative Analysis Lab Friday: Work / Study Period Upcoming due dates: Tuesday November 25: Solutions 1/2 point Quiz Tuesday November 25: Biomagnification Project Due Thursday November 27: SQA Lab Due Wednesday December 3: Cabbage Lab Due Friday December 5: Acid Base Solutions Exam Did you know 1 in 5 Alberta students go to school hungry every day?
Please bring your non-perishable food items, gift cards or monetary donations to chemistry class before December 12! For every donation you give, you will be entered in a draw to win new Laker's Gear! Remember the more you give, the better your chances and the better Holiday Season for a Family in Need! ![]() This is a short week again... which is nice for the kids to have a break, a time to breathe! I am very proud of the midterm marks in chem 20! It is obvious the kids prepared well and worked hard to do well! If a student didn't do as well as they wanted to, not to worry, if the students do better on the final than their mark on the midterm then the midterm mark will be replaced with the final mark (only if it benefits the student!) In keeping with final exams, the exemption policy has been axed. That means final exams are no longer to be exempt (in the 20/30 levels). Students in grade 10 are able to exempt 1 exam (either core or option) per semester. This is to better prepare the students for diploma exams: the idea is that they will be used to studying for multiple tests per semester. I feel this is not unreasonable in chem 20, as the students will be provided with a variety of review packages and (i promise) will be ready for the exam. It is my hope that we will complete the chemistry curriculum prior to the Christmas break, so they will have enough time to review during class. Another exciting development at Chestermere High School is the fact that we are part of High School Redesign, we have decided to halt classes prior to all diploma exams. That means, the students will be able to attend class tutorials January 13-16 but are not required to be in class (so if they choose to study during that time they are able to stay home and study). If the class is not complete however, it may be expected by the teacher that students attend (in order to complete the curriculum). I am very excited about all the changes occurring at CHS, and they are all to benefit the students. Even with all the anxiety of the chem 20s, I feel they are well prepared and definitely smart enough to do well in chemistry. This Week in Chem 20: Wednesday: Molar Concentration Thursday: Dilution Quick Lab Friday: Biomagnification Project Upcoming Due Dates: Friday November 21: Solutions Quiz 1 Monday November 24: SQA Lab Due Monday November 24: Extra Credit Video Tuesday November 25: Biomagnification Project Due Tuesday December 2: Cabbage Lab Due ![]() It’s Midterm Season! This week we will be doing quite a bit of review for the midterm on Thursday, so it’s a big week! The Chem 20s have their opportunity to rewrite both of the previously written unit tests on Monday and Tuesday, with the Midterm on Thursday! I have promised the kids they will have no homework over the long weekend! We have begun the third unit, Acid Base, which is a very important basis for chemistry 30! It is quite a long unit, and there will be a lot of labs to confirm the understanding of the unit (very similar to the gases unit). This week in Chem 20 Monday: Unit A Rewrite Exam / Midterm Studying Tuesday: Unit B Rewrite Exam / Midterm Studying Wednesday: Study / Work Period Thursday: MIDTERM EXAM Friday: Solution Prep Quick Lab Upcoming Due Dates Monday November 3: Gases Final Project Due Monday November 3: Unit A Rewrite Exam Tuesday November 4: Unit B Rewrite Exam Thursday November 6: CHEM 20 MIDTERM |
