![]() Last week, the chem 20s finished up their stoich unit, and successfully performed their final lab in chem 20. This week, they have time to work on their lab reports, as well as to study for the unit test and final exam. The students will be given ample time to review in class, and have been given the opportunity to reduce the weighting of their final exam by 10% if they choose to create a science fair project. I strongly suggest students take this opportunity, as the average on the science fair project last semester was 89% and the average on the final exam was 54%. This means that the science fair is only a benefit for students, if they choose to put in the effort. This week in chem 30 Monday: Work Period Tuesday: Review of Unit Wednesday: Stoich Unit Test Thursday: Work Period Friday: Corrections of Unit Tests Final week of chem 20 Monday: Study / Work Period Tuesday: Study / Work Period Wednesday: Rewrite of Acid Base Unit Test Thursday: Rewrite of Stoich Unit Test Upcoming Due Dates Wednesday June 3: Stoichiometry Unit D Test Friday June 5: Titration Lab Due (no lates) Wednesday June 10: Rewrite Acid Base Test Thursday June 11: Rewrite Stoich Test Wednesday June 17: Science Fair Project due Chemistry 20 Final Exam: FRIDAY JUNE 17, 2015

Last week (Friday) the chem 20s got their first taste of titrations. It was very fun, and a very important concept in science! They also had a quiz in chem 20 and almost everyone passed with high marks! I am very happy and impressed by the 20s right now. Hopefully they can keep this going!
This week in chem 20, we will be diving into Limiting and Excess reagents and finishing up with %Yield of a reaction. This will be done using the physical observations of a precipitation, and is quite applicable to many fields of science. Finally, we will be finishing up the chem 20 year with the final lab titration, which will require 2 days of class to finish up. This week in chem 20: Monday: Limiting and Excess Reagents Tuesday: Precipitation Lab Analysis Wednesday: % Yield Thursday: Final Titration Lab Friday: Final Titration Lab Upcoming due dates: Wednesday May 27: Titration quick lab Friday May 29: Precipitation quick lab Wednesday June 3: Stoich Unit D test Friday June 5: Titration Final Lab due Final Exam FRIDAY JUNE 19, 2015 ![]() Stoichiometry is worth 40% of the chemistry 20 curriculum, as it relates to all units. The reason I teach this unit last, is due to the fact that, after learning everything else, stoichiometry just makes sense. Basically, the chem 20s have most of the knowledge required to understand the stoichiometric process, and its just a matter of putting it together! Exciting! This week in chem 20, the students will be learning about titration techniques, and we will be performing our first (mini) titration. TItration is a quantitative stoichiometric lab technique that is used in many chemical industries today. The purpose of titration is to determine the concentration of an unknown, using the known concentration and volume of another reactant in a chemical reaction. This technique is key to success in chemistry 20 and used often in chem 30. Additionally, there is an entire chemistry section (ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY) dedicated to this process. So needless to say, titration is important! This week in Chem 20 Tuesday: Study / Work period Wednesday: Quiz 1 (Topic 1-3) Thursday: Topic 4 Titration Friday: Titration Quick Lab Upcoming Due Dates Tuesday May 19: Stoich IBL Project due (EXTENSION from Thursday) Wednesday May 20: Quiz 1 (topic 1-3) Wednesday May 27: Titration Quick Lab due Please remember to come check out the exhibition of learning Wednesday May 20 from 5-8pm at the school. Room 1028 (Ms. Mogck's classroom) will be a full science department exhibition, featuring live chemistry labs, biology projects and physics experiments! ![]() This week in chem 20 we will be beginning STOICHIOMETRY! This is one of the most important concepts of chemistry 20, and transfers over to ALL chemistry from now on! We are beginning the unit with an inquiry project to introduce the concept. From there we will get into how to perform stoichiometry calculations and analyze chemical reactions. This Week in Chem 20 Monday: Work on Stoich Project Tuesday: Topic 1 Intro to Stoich Wednesday: Topic 2 Quantity Stoich Thursday: Topic 3 Quantity to Quantity Stoich Upcoming Due Dates Thursday May 14: Stoich Project Due ![]() This week in chem 20 we will be completing Unit C: Solutions and Acids and Bases. The students will be provided with 2 study periods to ensure they are prepared for their exam Thursday. Students who missed classes due to the band trip will be writing the exam on Monday rather than Thursday. This week in Chem 20 Monday: Topic 8 Measuring pH Tuesday: Work Period Wednesday: In Class Review Thursday: UNIT C EXAM Friday: Stoich Intro Project Upcoming due dates: Monday May 4: Cabbage Lab due Thursday May 7: UNIT C EXAM Thursday May 14: Stoich Project Due |
